What prevents creative work from getting done? Resistance.

I'd like to share some more thoughts about experiencing resistance while trying to keep up creative work. Sometimes, indeed, resistance stands between me and my creativity. In order to find my way around it, I find it helpful to Identify and define what is going on. Pressfield is doing that wonderfully:

"What are the characteristics of Resistance?
Resistance can not be seen, touched, heard, or smelled. But it can be felt. We experience it as an energy field radiating from a work-in-potential. It’s negative. It’s aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work."
From the book: The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

Building a better understanding between creatives and non-creatives is one of my missions.

Share this post to help, because family and close friends of creative people are curious about the creative process. They want to understand and support it, they need the information.

Do your creative work

I want to share with you some of my creative process. It's been up and downs. Sometimes a good book is what I need in order to find some "up" time. Maybe you know this monster, from your own experience:

Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work. It will perjure, fabricate, falsify; seduce, bully, cajole. Resistance is protean. It will assume any form, if that’s what it takes to deceive you.

Book review: "Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered" by Austin Kleon

To sum things up: This book is a unique view on showing your work via internet / social media. Brings the power to YOUR hands. Made me jump out my seat with new ideas. Though, chapter 10: great advice but doesn’t belong here.

Important book. Austin is exploring the issue of showing your work through internet, and particularly social media. An issue that is being discussed endlessly in many blogs and books (of which I’ve read many).
But there is something different and unique about his discussion.

Creative process etc - a couple of books and a talk with one of the authors

At the moment I am reading two different books, each of them exploring the creative process from a different angle.

There is "Making Your Creative Mark: Nine Keys to Achieving Your Artistic Goals", by Eric Maisel.
So far I think it's an important book, it gives a combination between mindfulness and creativity. Lots of good advice, and some not as good.

There is "Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered", by Austin Kleon.
So far I think it is, as well, an important book. It's going through the issue of internet, and particularly social media. An issue that is being discussed endlessly in blogs and books (of which I’ve read many).
He is doing it differently, in his own way, coming at the subject from new angles.
It's a brand new book, by the way, and on Thursday there is a discussion with the Author on Goodreads. I'm in.

Anyway, I'll read and review them both fully and in detail, and will share it here when I'm done.
